Burdekin Toastmasters

Before you arrive:

• Contact Lyn Williams (Sergeant at Arms or SAA) on 4782 6204 and advise you will be attending. This is critical as the caterers need to know total attendance for meal planning. Also, please advise our SAA of any dietary needs.
• Dress is smart casual
• Arrange to arrive 7.00pm or before as meetings begin 7.15pm SHARP.

When you arrive:

• You will be welcomed by a member and shown a seat around the table
• Ask for an information kit if you have not been given one already
• Turn off your mobile phone
• See Terry Morgan (club treasurer) and pay $14.00 for the evening meal (main and dessert with tea or coffee, drinks are extra from the bar)
• Get ready to enjoy the evening

During the meeting:

• The meeting is from 7.00 pm to about 9.30pm and is broken into two main sections
• The first section is the Business section and it is governed by the chairman.
  • A different chairman is chosen for each meeting
  • The first section educates members about correct meeting procedure
  • The end of this section is evaluated by the parliamentarian
• The second section deals with impromptu and prepared speeches, educationals and evaluations and is chaired by the Toastmaster.
  • The impromptu speeches are called Table Topics. The Table Topics Master will choose 5-6 speakers who will talk for one minute on the chosen topic.
  • Prepared speeches and educationals generally go for 5-7 minutes but some advanced speeches and presentations may be double that.
  • All people who speak are provided with feedback from an evaluator who will make recommendations for future improvement.
• The last presentation is by the general evaluator who gives an overall assessment of the evening’s meeting
• The chairman will invite you to make comment about the evening’s meeting if you wish or you can choose to decline.

After the meeting:

• Make sure you have obtained an information kit before you leave
• Vice President Membership is available to answer any questions you might have
• As a guest, you are welcome to come along many times whilst you evaluate us.
